Wirral AC Endurance Series Mile, Bebington Oval

My first track outing of the season and my 2nd stab at the classic that is one mile in old money on the track. All my boyhood running heroes totally dominated this distance and after reading Seb biography over Christmas I was really eager to get back to doing a mile and or 1500m - 800m maybe!

We've started doing flat out no holds barred speed work on Thursday's and I was confident of beating my PB over the mile. I was planning to hit 72 second laps and if there was anything left with 300 to go, I would open up or die trying. So sub 4.49 or better was the target and the shape I'm in felt very realistic.

As this the middle distance is really new to me, the preparation is key and like a fool I got there late despite having all day to think about the route etc. So with my warm up slightly compromised I got to the start line and switched on trying to remember my game plan! Eventually it clicked but the gun went and off I charged, I must have hit the 1st 200 in 30 seconds, eventually getting an inside line around 350m and going through the 1st lap in 68 secs, yikes!

I settle in for the 2nd lap to the planned pace but a combo of no oxygen meant I day dreamed through the next lap, no time was shouted at the bell and I glanced with 300 to go to see I was bang on 4 mins. So, the sub 4.50 was still on, I upped the pace eventually belting it out for the last 120 and crossed the line on my watch in 4.52. This was rounded up to 4.54, I pb by 4 seconds which for middle distance is great but I was slightly disappointed, typical runner!

I was thinking of doing the 1500m this Tuesday at Stretford/Trafford but think I'll go for the 3k. It should be a good night as my training homies are all going, along with other lads in and around me.
