After doing pretty well at U20 level in the javelin (ranked #2 UK, #1 Scotland, English Schools Gold) in 1994, I didn't manage to continue my throwing career for various reasons.
Years later, with no training I decided out of the blue to enter the Scottish Champs (around 2002?). Threw mid 55m ish but my back wasn't up to the forces being put through it. Had another go in 2006 for fun, went to Birmingham and then Trafford throwing just over 50m both times.
I entered the Trafford Grand Prix this year, throwing just short of 52m which I was fairly pleased with.
I've only started getting fit again in the last 12 months (was 18 stone with high BP). I used the indoor rower, Concept2, to gain fitness levels and have done pretty well in that sport now although I am more of a power rower than endurance!

Would love to be able to throw javelin competitively again, and will be doing more strength and power work this winter to be in a position where I can go off a full run-up. Hopefully next year we'll see if I can break that magic 60m again. |
