Back for a play.... Graham Lay 4 Dec 09 21:03Report

After doing pretty well at U20 level in the javelin (ranked #2 UK, #1 Scotland, English Schools Gold) in 1994, I didn't manage to continue my throwing career for various reasons.

Years later, with no training I decided out of the blue to enter the Scottish Champs (around 2002?). Threw mid 55m ish but my back wasn't up to the forces being put through it. Had another go in 2006 for fun, went to Birmingham and then Trafford throwing just over 50m both times.
I entered the Trafford Grand Prix this year, throwing just short of 52m which I was fairly pleased with.

I've only started getting fit again in the last 12 months (was 18 stone with high BP). I used the indoor rower, Concept2, to gain fitness levels and have done pretty well in that sport now although I am more of a power rower than endurance!

PBs
100m - 14.1s
200m - 28.8s
300m - 44.6s
400m - 62.6s
500m - 1m 19.9s

English 500m - Silver 2009, Silver 2010, Bronze 2011
English Relay 2011 - Gold
Welsh 500m - Silver 2009, Bronze 2010
Welsh Relay 2010 - Gold

Would love to be able to throw javelin competitively again, and will be doing more strength and power work this winter to be in a position where I can go off a full run-up. Hopefully next year we'll see if I can break that magic 60m again.

Time for another play. I have embarked on a 6 week training plan prior to the Open Meeting at Exeter on 28th Sep 2010.

Hoping to better my 2009 and 2006 cameo appearances!

Did OK, 54.90m - more next year!

Have just set a new Shot Put PB with 11.68m at Exeter but did 12.40m in the warm up so there's more to come. Also managed 28.90m with a standing hammer throw and 51.68m javelin to get a 50m+ marker in.

Have been doing more strength work recently and hope to capitalise on that at the next one. Targets 12.50m Shot, 55m Javelin.
